CHAPTER 22

Metamorphosis

It’s nine in the morning and I’m gliding down Fifth Avenue in the back of a Lincoln Town Car. I could get used to this.

Remembering Kell E’s remarks to me — and her killer look — about always dressing to represent her, I’m wearing her mango light cashmere tunic with the scoop neck and three-quarter sleeves over my white denim mini. I only have my gold flip-flops, which I figure are all right because I’ll be getting a mani/pedi later on today. I keep up with them regularly now, because I never know when Cisco will call and I’ll have to go onstage. I’m not getting caught with scraggly chipped nails peeking out of my cool boots.

I’ve actually been on this part of Fifth Avenue to see the Christmas tree and store windows, but I’ve never been here on a sunny morning. There’s a different vibe — less touristy and more everyday people. The more I get to see of this city, the more I love it.

The limo slips further downtown and the streets get a little grittier here and there. It doesn’t matter to me. The air-conditioning is pumping and all I have to do is sit back and relax. If I allow myself to think about the premiere, I might explode from the excitement, so I’m concentrating on staying calm.

Stop-and-go traffic clogs the streets of Soho, but we make it to the front of Kell E’s. The driver opens the door for me, and a few people turn to see who’s getting out, but most keep right on walking. Tatianna is waiting for me inside and brings me straight to the back room to get started. Kell E gives me the once-over. She seems to approve, until she gets to my feet.

“My God, don’t you have anything besides those rubber shoes?” She sighs. “They’re like sponges absorbing all the filth from the streets.” She turns to Tatianna. “Go over to the Roman Sandal. Get the shoes I looked at yesterday. What size are you?”

I tell her, “Seven.”

“Get them in a seven and get an acceptable pair of gold flip-flops and a flat gladiator — brown, I think,” she says to Tati. “I’m letting you pick. Let me see what you can do on your own.”

Tatianna hurries out of the store and down the street. I didn’t think anything could scare Tati until I saw her with Kell E. For a girl who waltzes around with an I don’t care attitude, she sure jumps to please her boss.

“Now you,” she says to me, “go behind that curtain and take everything off except your panties. The dress I have for you is a corset. You won’t need a bra.”

I do as I’m told but after I take everything off, I’m embarrassed to walk out topless. I don’t get a chance to dwell on it.

“Hurry up in there! We don’t have all day,” calls Kell E.

I walk out with my arms covering my boobs, and step up onto a round carpeted platform in front of a three-way mirror.
